Chennai: In a dramatic turn following the 2026 Assembly elections, actor-turned-politician Vijay has moved swiftly to form the next government in Tamil Nadu. The leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam met Governor R. N. Ravi at the Lok Bhavan on Wednesday to formally stake his claim, backed by support from the Indian National Congress. However, uncertainty looms as the Governor remains unconvinced about the party’s majority.

Numbers Game Puts TVK in a Tight Spot

In the 234-member Assembly, the majority mark is 118. TVK emerged as the single-largest party with 108 seats, disrupting the long-standing dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. However, Vijay’s victory from two constituencies reduces the party’s effective strength to 107, leaving it 11 seats short.

The Congress, with 5 seats, has extended support, taking the tally to 112. Despite this, TVK still requires at least six more MLAs to cross the majority mark, making alliances with smaller parties crucial.

Regional Allies Reluctant, Talks Continue

Efforts to secure backing from regional players have faced resistance. The Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, and the Indian Union Muslim League have declined support. Meanwhile, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, led by Thol. Thirumavalavan, is yet to make a final decision.

With no clear consensus among these parties, the political equation remains fragile, leaving TVK dependent on last-minute negotiations and independent MLAs.
