Next CM of West Bengal: 7 Contenders in Shocking Race for Power
KOLKATA — In a political transformation of historic proportions, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged victorious in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, securing 207 seats and dislodging the Trinamool Congress (TMC) from its 15-year stronghold. The TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, was restricted to 81 seats, marking the first time the BJP will form a government in the state.
Following the results, the BJP leadership has appointed Union Home Minister Amit Shah as the central observer to oversee the election of the legislative party leader. While the party high command prepares for the transition of power, several prominent names are being discussed for the top post.
The Probable Chief Ministerial Candidates
- Suvendu Adhikari: The current frontrunner and former Leader of the Opposition. His victory over Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur constituency by a margin of over 15,000 votes has solidified his position as the party’s most powerful local face.
- Samik Bhattacharya: The BJP State President and a veteran RSS worker. Seen as a moderate “Bhadralok” face, he is credited with the organizational strategy that led to the party’s record-breaking mandate.
- Dilip Ghosh: The former state president who is widely popular among grassroots workers. After being brought back into a central role earlier this year, his victory in Kharagpur Sadar has put him back in the leadership conversation.

- Swapan Dasgupta: An intellectual face and former Rajya Sabha MP who won from the Rashbehari seat. He is seen as a candidate who can bridge the gap between the party’s core ideology and Bengal’s cultural elite.
- Nisith Pramanik: A former Union Minister and influential leader from North Bengal. His ability to mobilize regional votes makes him a key figure in the party’s internal deliberations.
- Agnimitra Paul: The MLA from Asansol Dakshin and state vice president. Her active role in street-level protests and high visibility during the campaign has made her a significant contender for a top leadership role.
- Roopa Ganguly: A well-known public figure and former MP with a strong appeal among urban and women voters, currently representing the party’s interests in South Bengal.
Historic Swearing-In on Rabindra Jayanti
The BJP has signaled that the oath-taking ceremony for the new Chief Minister will likely take place on May 9, coinciding with Rabindra Jayanti. This choice is intended to symbolize a “new dawn” for West Bengal, aligning the party’s victory with the state’s deep cultural heritage.
Next Steps in Government Formation
The Election Commission of India is expected to hand over the official gazette notification to the Chief Electoral Officer today, May 5. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to visit Kolkata for the swearing-in ceremony later this week. Sources indicate that in addition to the Chief Minister, the party may also appoint a Deputy Chief Minister to ensure regional balance between the northern and southern districts of the state.
