Epicenter Located at Afghanistan-Tajikistan Border
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS) and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the earthquake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was identified in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, specifically near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border.
The official coordinates provided by Jammu and Kashmir authorities placed the quake at a Latitude of 36.398° N and a Longitude of 70.878° E. While the magnitude was significant, the depth of the quake was recorded at approximately 150 km to 177 km. Seismologists often note that deeper earthquakes, while felt over a wider area, generally cause less surface destruction than shallow ones.

Widespread Tremors Reported Across North India
Social media was flooded with reports within minutes of the jolts. In the National Capital Region (NCR), residents in high-rise buildings reported seeing ceiling fans and furniture sway for several seconds.
In Punjab and Chandigarh, the impact was equally palpable. Local residents described “strong jolts” that lasted between 5 to 10 seconds, prompting many to evacuate their homes and gather in open spaces. Similar reports emerged from the Jammu and Kashmir valley, where the proximity to the epicenter made the tremors feel particularly intense.

Varying Magnitude Reports from Global Agencies
While the EMSC and Indian officials clocked the quake at 5.9, other international agencies provided slightly different data:
- United States Geological Survey (USGS): Recorded a magnitude of 5.8.
- German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ): Reported a 5.9 magnitude at a depth of 177 km.
No Immediate Casualties or Damage Reported
Despite the widespread panic and the intensity of the tremors, there have been no immediate reports of loss of life or significant property damage from any part of India or Afghanistan. Authorities in affected states are currently monitoring the situation and remain on alert for potential aftershocks.
