New Delhi/Tripura, March 15, 2026– In a massive exercise of democratic machinery, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially released the schedule for the 2026 Legislative Assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, joined by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, finalized the dates following a series of high-level reviews, including a crucial visit to West Bengal on March 10.

The 2026 polls are set to be one of the largest electoral undertakings in recent years. According to the ECI, approximately 17.4 crore voters are eligible to participate across 824 constituencies. To facilitate this, the commission will set up 2.19 lakh polling stations and deploy nearly 25 lakh election personnel. CEC Gyanesh Kumar emphasized the importance of youth participation, calling the election a “festival of pride” and urging first-time voters to take charge of shaping the state and national future.

Staggered Polling Schedule and Counting Dates
To ensure security and administrative efficiency, the ECI has structured the voting phases as follows:
- Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry: Single-phase voting on April 9 (Thursday).
- Tamil Nadu: Single-phase voting for all 234 seats on April 23 (Thursday).
- West Bengal: A high-stakes two-phase battle for 294 seats on April 23 and April 29.
- Counting of Votes: Results for all five regions will be declared on May 4 (Monday).

The 2026 elections present a diverse political landscape:
- West Bengal: A fierce face-off between the ruling TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee since 2011, and a resurgent BJP.
- Kerala: The incumbent LDF faces the UDF, but the BJP-led NDA is aggressively targeting a significant breakthrough by contesting nearly 100 seats, with allies like BDJS and Twenty20 covering the remaining 40.
- Assam: The BJP-led NDA government seeks to retain power against a consolidated Congress challenge.
- Tamil Nadu & Puducherry: Alliances are in the final stages of seat-sharing as the DMK-led bloc faces a challenge from the AIADMK-BJP-AINRC formations.

ECI Announces Bye-Election Schedule for Tripura and Other States
Additionally, the Election Commission of India has released a specific schedule for upcoming bye-elections in several states, detailing key dates for the electoral process. According to the official notification for Assembly Constituencies (ACs) in Goa, Karnataka, Nagaland, and Tripura, the date of poll is set for April 9, 2026 (Thursday), with counting on May 4, 2026 (Monday). For ACs in Gujarat and Maharashtra, the bye-elections are scheduled for later, with the date of poll fixed for April 23, 2026 (Thursday), while counting for these states will also take place on May 4, 2026 (Monday).
Constitutional Oversight and Fair Play
To ensure a level playing field, the ECI has invoked Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 20B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, to appoint Central Observers. These observers will oversee field-level management and the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, which is now in immediate effect. Intensive voter list revisions have already been completed, ensuring that the final electoral rolls are accurate and inclusive.
