Suvendu Adhikari West Bengal Chief Minister: Historic Shift Amidst Tragic Violence in Kolkata

KOLKATA — In a historic political shift for West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari has been formally elected as the Leader of the BJP Legislative Party and is set to take oath as the state’s next Chief Minister. The announcement was made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah following a high-stakes legislative meeting in Kolkata on Friday.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, at the iconic Brigade Parade Ground. The date holds added cultural significance as it coincides with Pochishe Boisakh (25 Baishak), the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and several top NDA leaders are expected to attend the high-profile event, which marks the formation of the first-ever BJP government in the state.

A New Leadership Structure: Two Deputy CMs on the Cards
The incoming administration is expected to introduce a collaborative leadership model to manage the state’s complex political and social landscape. Sources indicate that the new government structure will include two Deputy Chief Ministers. While the names are yet to be officially confirmed, the arrangement is viewed as a move to ensure broad representation across different regions and communities in Bengal.
The Giant Killer: Victories That Paved the Way
Adhikari’s elevation follows a series of electoral performances that directly challenged the long-standing dominance of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Having previously defeated Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram during the 2021 assembly elections, Adhikari repeated his “giant killer” streak in the recent polls by wresting the Bhabanipur seat—Banerjee’s own stronghold.

According to Election Commission data, Adhikari secured the Bhabanipur seat with a decisive margin of over 15,000 votes. This victory, coupled with the BJP’s sweep of 206 seats across the state, cemented his position as the central face of the party’s campaign and the clear choice for the top post.
Focus on Governance and Law and Order
The transition comes at a sensitive time for the state. Following the announcement of the election results on May 4, reports of post-poll violence have emerged from several districts. Adhikari, who has spent the last few years strengthening the party’s grassroots outreach, now faces the immediate task of restoring administrative stability.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who presided over today’s meeting, noted that the proposal for Adhikari’s leadership received unanimous support from the newly elected MLAs. The meeting was also attended by central observers and senior state leaders, signaling a unified front as the party prepares to take the reins of the state after 15 years of TMC rule.
