Key Notes:
Ponnam Prabhakar vs Tejasvi Surya: Minister Demands Action Over Telangana Remarks

HYDERABAD – A major political row has erupted in the Lok Sabha after BJP MP Tejasvi Surya compared the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and the formation of Telangana to the 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan. The remarks have drawn a sharp formal protest from Telangana’s Minister for Transport and BC Welfare, Ponnam Prabhakar, who has petitioned Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for immediate action.
The Controversy: A “Factually Untenable” Analogy
During a parliamentary session on April 16, 2026, Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, while participating in a debate, reportedly drew a parallel between the 2014 creation of Telangana and the traumatic 1947 partition.
In a strongly worded letter to Speaker Om Birla, Minister Ponnam Prabhakar labeled the analogy “not only factually untenable but also deeply insensitive.” He emphasized that while the 1947 partition was marked by unprecedented violence and displacement, the formation of Telangana was the result of a protracted democratic and constitutional process reflecting the aspirations of millions.
“Equating this with the traumatic and violent partition of the nation diminishes the sanctity of that process and disregards the sentiments of the people of Telangana,” Prabhakar stated in his official notice.

Minister Demands Unconditional Apology
The notice served by the Telangana Minister outlines several key demands to uphold the “dignity of the House” and prevent “regional discord.” The primary requests include:
- Expunction of Remarks: An immediate order to remove the controversial statements from the official records of the Lok Sabha.
- Unconditional Apology: A directive for the Hon’ble Member (Tejasvi Surya) to tender an apology to the House and the people of Telangana.
- Privilege Proceedings: An examination of the matter under rules governing parliamentary conduct and privilege.
- Potential Disqualification: A call to consider serious action, including disqualification, if the remarks are found to be a “serious breach of privilege.”
Impact on Federalism and Regional Harmony
Minister Prabhakar warned that such comparisons carry the risk of fostering regional disharmony and undermining the spirit of cooperative federalism.
“Statements of this nature fall short of the standards of responsibility and decorum expected from Members of Parliament,” the letter noted, adding that misrepresenting historical and constitutional realities could have long-term negative effects on national unity.
Current Status
The Speaker’s office has acknowledged receipt of the notice. While the BJP leadership has yet to issue an official response to the specific demands of the letter, the incident has already triggered a heated debate across social media and political circles in Telangana, with several local leaders joining the call for a retraction.
