Rana, who had been in a Permanent Vegetative State (PVS) for over 13 years, breathed his last at 4:10 PM on March 24, 2026. His passing marks the conclusion of a long-standing legal and ethical battle that has redefined the “Right to Die with Dignity” in India.

A Decade-Long Struggle
Harish’s life changed forever in August 2013 when he was a B.Tech student at Panjab University. A tragic fall from the fourth floor of his paying guest accommodation resulted in severe head injuries, leaving him with 100% quadriplegic disability.
For 13 years, Harish was kept alive solely through Clinically Assisted Nutrition and Hydration (CANH) and intermittent life support. His parents, who acted as “unyielding pillars of support,” eventually approached the courts, arguing that keeping him in such a state was prolonging his agony rather than preserving his life.

The Landmark Supreme Court Verdict
On March 11, 2026, a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K.V. Viswanathan delivered a historic judgment. The court ruled that:
- The Right to Die with Dignity is an inseparable part of the Right to Life under Article 21 of the Constitution.
- Medical interventions like feeding tubes (CANH) constitute “medical treatment” and can be withdrawn if they no longer serve the patient’s best interest.
- The court famously noted: “You are not giving up on your son. You are allowing him to leave with dignity.”

Final Moments and Legacy
Following the court’s order, Harish was shifted from his home in Ghaziabad to the Palliative Oncology Unit at AIIMS Delhi. Under a specialized medical protocol, doctors began the gradual withdrawal of life support to ensure a natural and painless end.
In a final act of humanity, AIIMS sources confirmed that Harish’s family has donated his corneas and heart valves, ensuring that even in death, he contributes to the lives of others.
The hospital released a statement extending its heartfelt condolences to the family, noting that Harish was under the care of a dedicated team of doctors until the very end.
