AGARTALA — The political temperature in Tripura has reached a boiling point as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), grapple with a deepening rift over seat-sharing for the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections.

In a high-stakes organizational meeting held on Saturday at the Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha appeared to shift the burden of maintaining the alliance onto the shoulders of Royal Scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma. Invoking the principle of “Jot Dharma” (the ethics of alliance), the Chief Minister suggested that while the BJP remains committed to the partnership, the onus of its survival now rests entirely with the Motha leadership. b

Cracks in the Coalition: The Battle for the Hills

The closed-door session, attended by BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh and National Secretary Vinod Sonkar, was ostensibly convened to discuss the intensive revision of electoral rolls. However, sources within the party confirm that the true agenda was the looming electoral showdown in the 28-member Council.

While the BJP’s central leadership is pushing for a unified front to keep the Left-Congress combine at bay, the state unit is reportedly simmering with discontent. Many grassroots workers are wary of surrendering significant ground to Tipra Motha, which currently controls the Council. The friction stems from Motha’s perceived “stubbornness” regarding specific seats where both parties claim dominance.

By publicly emphasizing “Jot Dharma,” Dr. Manik Saha has executed a calculated political maneuver. Analysts suggest this strategy serves two purposes:

1. Internal Management: It pacifies BJP loyalists who are reluctant to concede seats by showing that the party is not simply “bowing down” but acting as a responsible senior partner.
2. External Pressure: It places Tipra Motha in a corner. If the alliance talks fail, the BJP can frame the narrative as a failure on the part of Pradyot Debbarma to uphold the spirit of the coalition.

“The BJP is ready to honor its alliance commitments. The ball is now in Motha’s court to ensure the partnership remains intact for the sake of the democratic process,” a senior leader quoted the Chief Minister as saying during the meet.

Electoral Revision or Election Strategy?

Officially, the Chief Minister urged booth-level workers to focus on the Special Intensive Revision of the Electoral Roll, calling for an error-free list to ensure no genuine voter is disenfranchised. He noted that such reforms have been successful nationwide and must be replicated in Tripura.

However, for the workers on the ground, the “voter list” is a secondary concern. The primary anxiety remains the seat-sharing formula. With the April 12 polling date approaching fast, the lack of clarity on which party will contest which seat has left the cadre in a state of flux.
