West Bengal Election 2026: ECI Purges Top Cops to Stop Feud
KOLKATA – In a swift and decisive move following the announcement of the 2026 Assembly election dates, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered a major shake-up of West Bengal’s top police hierarchy. The reshuffle, aimed at ensuring a “violence-free and peaceful” electoral process, saw the immediate transfer of the State’s Director General of Police (DGP) and the Kolkata Police Commissioner.

Major Leadership Overhaul
Just hours after Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar promised a zero-tolerance policy toward voter intimidation, the ECI executed the following high-profile appointments:
- New DGP of West Bengal: Siddh Nath Gupta (1992-batch IPS) has been appointed to the top post, replacing Peeyush Pandey. Gupta previously served as the DG of Correctional Services.
- New Kolkata Police Commissioner: Ajay Kumar Nand (1996-batch IPS) takes over from Supratim Sarkar. Nand is well-regarded for his experience in managing high-risk zones, including his previous successful stints in the Maoist-affected “Jangalmahal” belt.
- ADG & IGP (Law & Order): Ajay Mukund Ranade (1995-batch IPS) has been named the new chief of Law and Order, a critical role for poll security, replacing Vineet Kumar Goyel.

The “Zero Tolerance” Mandate
The transfers are seen as a direct fulfillment of CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s pledge during yesterday’s press conference at Vigyan Bhavan. Addressing concerns over West Bengal’s history of post-poll friction, Kumar stated that the Commission would “not leave any stone unturned” to protect the integrity of the vote.
“The Commission will have zero tolerance towards violence. District Election Officers and SPs have been categorically instructed to ensure that every voter can reach the booth without fear,” the CEC emphasized.

Poll Strategy: Fewer Phases, Higher Security
In a significant departure from the eight-phase marathon of 2021, the ECI has scheduled the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections in just two phases:
- Phase I: April 23 (152 constituencies)
- Phase II: April 29 (142 constituencies)
- Counting Day: May 4
The Commission noted that the reduction in phases was decided after detailed deliberations to make the process “convenient for everyone” while maintaining a massive security blanket. To build voter confidence, the ECI has already begun the early deployment of nearly 480 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) across the state.
With the Model Code of Conduct now in force, these administrative changes signal the ECI’s intent to maintain a level playing field and prevent any local administrative bias during the high-stakes battle for the 294-seat Assembly.
