The Experimental Success at Nagichhara
The journey of Blueberry Cultivation in Tripura began in 2024 when agricultural expert Dr. Rajib Ghosh brought blueberry saplings from Pune. These were planted at the State Horticultural and Plantation Crop Research Center in Nagichhara on an experimental basis.
According to Panchal Bhattacharya, an Agri Officer at the research center, the plants bore flowers and fruits in the very first year. This year, the yield has significantly increased, with bushes laden with clusters of white flowers and ripening berries.
Future of Blueberry Cultivation in Tripura

Ideal Climate and Growing Conditions
Blueberry cultivation in the Indian subcontinent typically sees a harvest window between March and May. To ensure success, the research center has implemented modern farming techniques:
- Shade Nets: To protect the plants from extreme heat.
- Poly Mulching: Used to maintain soil moisture and control weeds.
- High-Altitude Potential: Experts suggest that cooler regions like Jampui Hills and other hilly terrains of Tripura are ideal for large-scale commercial production.

Market Demand and Economic Impact
The blueberry is hailed as a “Superfood” due to its high nutritional value. Its commercial potential is massive because:
- Bakery Industry: High demand for cakes, muffins, and confectionery.
- Processed Goods: Blueberries can be dried and sold throughout the year.
- Health Consciousness: Rich in antioxidants, it is a favorite among health-conscious consumers.
A New Horizon for Tripura’s Farmers
If local farmers adopt scientific methods to grow this fruit, it will add a prestigious new name to Tripuraâs fruit basket. Commercializing blueberry cultivation in Tripura could drastically improve the financial status of the farming community, turning the state into a hub for exotic fruit exports.
